Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia Friuli–Venezia Giulia lies in extreme northeastern Italy, with Slovenia bordering it on the east and Austria on the north. Its capital and largest city is Trieste. In the wine world, Friuli–Venezia Giulia is best known for white wines made from Pinot Grigio and Friulano and sparkling wines made from Glera. It has 4 DOCGs, 12 DOCs (see map), and 3 IGPs. In 2016, Friuli–Venezia Giulia produced 1.9 million hl (20.6 million cases) of wine, 77% of it white—tied with Veneto for the highest proportion of white wine of any region. The region’s primary grape varieties are Pinot Grigio (26%), Merlot (15%), and Friulano (9%).
