History: Established as a DOC in 2017, elevating Pinot Grigio from IGP delle Venezie (now IGP Trevenezie)

Production: Potentially more than 1,800,000 hl / 20,000,000 cases
Principal White Grape Varieties: Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Verduzzo
Styles and Wine Composition:
WHITE WINES
  • Bianco (Wh, WhFr): Minimum 50% Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, and/or Verduzzo (Friulano and/or Trevigiano) + OAWG
  • Pinot Grigio (Wh, WhFr, Ro, RoFr): Minimum 85% Pinot Grigio; maximum 15% Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Muller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, and/or Verduzzo + OANWG*
ROSATO WINES
  • While there is not technically a rosato category for this denomination, there is enough pigmentation in the skins of Pinot Grigio that the wine can be made to appear copper or pink in color with long skin contact
SPARKLING WINES
  • Pinot Grigio Spumante (WhSp): Minimum 85% Pinot Grigio; maximum 15% Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, and/or Verduzzo + OANWG*

Significant Production Rules:
  • Zone of production: The entire regions of Friuli–Venezia Giulia and Veneto, plus the Trentino half of Trentino–Alto Adige (i.e., the province of Trento)
  • Spumante must be fermented in autoclaves (pressurized tanks)
  • Minimum alcohol level: 11%
  • Residual sugar: Spumante can range from zero dosage to dry
  • Aging: No minimums specified
  • Varietal Pinot Grigio may be labeled as “Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC”
