History: Established as a DOC in 1989; Rosso della Val di Cornia (Val di Cornia Rosso) and the former subzone Suvereto were established as separate DOCGs in 2011

Vineyard Area: 14 ha / 35 acres (2021)

Production: 140 hl / 1,570 cases (5-year average)

Styles and Wine Composition

WHITE WINES
  • Bianco (Wh): Minimum 50% Vermentino; maximum 50% Ansonica, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, Trebbiano Toscano, and/or Viognier; maximum 15% OAWG
  • Ansonica (Wh): Minimum 85% Ansonica + OAWG
  • Vermentino (Wh): Minimum 85% Vermentino + OAWG
ROSATO WINES
  • Rosato (Ro): Minimum 40% Sangiovese; maximum 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot; maximum 20% OARG
RED WINES
  • Cabernet Sauvignon (Rd): Minimum 85% Cabernet Sauvignon + OARG
  • Ciliegiolo (Rd): Minimum 85% Ciliegiolo + OARG
  • Merlot (Rd): Minimum 85% Merlot + OARG
  • Sangiovese (Rd): Minimum 85% Sangiovese + OARG
  • Superiore (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese)
DESSERT AND SPECIALTY WINES
  • Ansonica Passito (WhSw): Minimum 85% Ansonica + OAWG
  • Aleatico Passito (RdSw): 100% Aleatico

Significant Production Rules

  • Minimum alcohol level: 11.0% for Bianco and Rosato; 11.5% for Ansonica and Vermentino; 12.0% for red varietals; 12.0% for Passito (16.0% potential); 12.5% for Superiore
  • Aging: For Superiore, minimum 18 months (ERD = May 1, V+2)
