Friuli–Venezia Giulia has one of the highest proportions of white wine of any Italian region. The primary grape variety in this region is Pinot Grigio. Other white varieties that are prevalent in Friuli include the international varieties Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and the native grapes Friulano and Ribolla Gialla.
The largest denomination that lies fully within Friuli–Venezia Giulia is Friuli DOC, a new denomination from 2016 that covers all of the region south of the Alps, and produces both white and red wine. Some of Friuli’s most interesting wines, though, come from the hilly area along the border with Slovenia. In this area are Collio Goriziano DOC—often shortened to Collio—and, to its north, Friuli Colli Orientali DOC. These two denominations produce a wide range of wines, red and white, blends and varietals, from any of a dozen varieties, including Friulano and Ribolla Gialla along with several international varieties.
