Synopsis
History: Established as a DOC for white wines in 1984; red and rosato wines added in 1994; Bolgheri Sassicaia split off as a separate DOC in 2013
Vineyard Area: 968 ha / 2,391 acres (2021)
Production: 47,950 hl / 532,800 cases (5-year average)—81% red, 14% white, 5% rosato

Styles and Wine Composition
WHITE WINES
- Bianco (Wh): Any proportions of Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, and/or Viognier; maximum 40% OAWG
- Sauvignon (Wh): Minimum 85% Sauvignon Blanc + OAWG
- Vermentino (Wh): Minimum 85% Vermentino + OAWG
ROSATO WINES
- Rosato (Ro): Any proportions of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and/or Merlot; maximum 50% Sangiovese; maximum 50% Syrah; maximum 30% OARG
RED WINES
- Rosso (Rd): Any proportions of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and/or Merlot; maximum 50% Sangiovese; maximum 50% Syrah; maximum 30% OARG
- Superiore (Rosso)
Significant Production Rules
- Minimum alcohol level: 10.5% for Sauvignon; 11.0% for Bianco and Vermentino; 11.5% for Rosato and Rosso; 12.5% for Rosso with a vineyard name and for Superiore
- Aging: For Rosso, minimum approx. 10 months (ERD = September 1, V+1); for Superiore, minimum 2 years, including 1 year in barrel (ERD = January 1, V+3)
