Aglianico-Based DOPs

Aglianico, arguably the most important grape variety of southern Italy, is one of the few grapes with a significant presence in more than one southern Italian region. It is the most planted variety in both Campania and Basilicata. In both regions, Aglianico is mainly grown at higher elevations in the Apennines, and its best expressions come from volcanic soils.

Aglianico-based DOPsIn Campania, Taurasi DOCG, a varietal made from Aglianico, is considered by many to be the finest red wine of southern Italy. There are several other denominations throughout Campania that make varietal Aglianico wines, of which the best known is Aglianico del Taburno DOCG, which makes both red and rosato Aglianicos.

Farther southeast in Basilicata are two collocated denominations, Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG and Aglianico del Vulture DOC, both of whose wines are made with 100% Aglianico.

Some Aglianico is also grown across the border from Basilicata in Puglia, but Aglianico is a minor variety overall in Puglia.
