RED WINES
  • Vino Nobile (Rd): Minimum 70% Sangiovese (locally Prugnolo Gentile); maximum 30% OARG; maximum 5% OAWG
  • Riserva (Vino Nobile)
  • Vino Nobile with Pieve designation (Rd): Minimum 85% Sangiovese; maximum 15% Canaiolo Nero, Ciliegiolo, and/or Mammolo; maximum 5% Colorino

Subzones and Other Geographic Terms

The denomination is divided into 12 Pievi (sing. Pieve), using an archaic term for church parishes for their unità geografiche aggiuntive (“additional geographical units”). The 12 Pievi are:

  • Badia
  • Caggiole
  • Cerliana
  • Cervognano
  • Gracciano
  • Le Grazie
  • San Biagio
  • Sant’Albino
  • Sant’Ilario
  • Valardegna
  • Valiano

Significant Production Rules

  • Grapes for Pieve-designated wines must be from vineyards that are at least 15 years old and are managed by the producer/bottler
  • Vineyard elevation: Minimum 250 m (820 ft); maximum 600 m (1,970 ft)
  • Minimum alcohol level: 12.5% for Vino Nobile; 13.0% for Riserva and Pieve-designated wines
  • Aging: For Vino Nobile, minimum 2 years, including either 12 months in barrel and 6 months in bottle or 18 months in barrel (ERD = January 1, V+3); for Riserva, minimum 3 years, including 12 months in barrel and 6 months in bottle (ERD = January 1, V+4); for Pieve-designated wines, minimum 3 years, including 12 months in barrel and 12 months in bottle (ERD = January 1, V+4)
