History: Formerly part of the Chianti DOC Montalbano subzone; became a separate DOC in 1975 and a DOCG in 1990

RED WINES
  • Rosso (Rd): Minimum 50% Sangiovese; 10–20% Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon; maximum 20% Canaiolo Nero; maximum 10% Canaiolo Bianco, Malvasia, and/or Trebbiano; maximum 10% OARG
  • Riserva (Rosso)

Significant Production Rules

  • Maximum vineyard elevation: 400 m (1,310 ft)
  • Minimum alcohol level: 12.5%
  • Aging: For Rosso, minimum approx. 20 months, including 8 months in barrel (ERD = June 1, V+2); for Riserva, minimum approx. 3 years, including 12 months in barrel (ERD = September 29, V+3)
