WHITE WINES
  • Bianco (Wh, WhFr, WhSw, WhFrSw): Any proportions of white grape varieties approved for the region of Calabria
  • Varietals (Wh, WhFr, WhSw, WhFrSw): Minimum 85% Ansonica, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Greco, Guardavalle, Guarnaccia, Malvasia, Manzoni Bianco, Montonico Bianco, Moscato, Pecorello, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Trebbiano Toscano, Verdicchio, Welschriesling, or Zibibbo + OAWG
ROSATO WINES
  • Rosato (Ro, RoFr, RoSw, RoFrSw): Any proportions of red grape varieties approved for the region of Calabria
  • Varietals (Ro, RoFr, RoSw, RoFrSw): Same as Rosso varietals
RED WINES
  • Rosso (Rd, RdFr, RdSw, RdFrSw): Any proportions of red grape varieties approved for the region of Calabria
  • Varietals (Rd, RdFr, RdSw, RdFrSw): Minimum 85% Aglianico, Alicante, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Castiglione, Gaglioppo, Greco Nero, Magliocco Canino, Malvasia Nera di Brindisi, Marsigliana Nera, Merlot, Montepulciano, Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese, Nero d’Avola (aka Calabrese), Nocera, Petit Verdot, Prunesta, Sangiovese, or Syrah + OARG

Significant Production Rules

  • Zone of production: Entire region of Calabria
  • Grapes for Passito must be dried on or off the vine to achieve a minimum potential alcohol level of 14.0%
  • Spumante must be fermented in autoclaves (pressurized tanks)
  • Minimum alcohol level: 10.0% for Bianco frizzante; 10.5% for Bianco tranquillo, Rosato (tranquillo and frizzante), and Rosso frizzante; 11.0% for Rosso tranquillo, Novello, and all Spumante wines; 14.0% potential for Passito
  • Residual sugar: Spumante may be brut or extra dry
  • Aging: No minimums specified
