Styles and Wine Composition
WHITE WINES
- Bianco (Wh): Any proportions of grape varieties approved for the region of Lombardia
- Varietals (Wh): Minimum 85% of any one of the allowed white grape varieties
ROSATO WINES
- Rosato (Ro, RoFr): Any proportions of grape varieties approved for the region of Lombardia
- Varietals (Ro, RoFr): Minimum 85% of any one of the allowed red grape varieties + OANRG
RED WINES
- Rosso (Rd): Any proportions of grape varieties approved for the region of Lombardia
- Varietals (Rd): Minimum 85% any one of the allowed red grape varieties + OANRG
- Novello (Rosso, red varietals)
SPARKLING WINES
- Spumante Metodo Classico (WhSp): Any proportions of Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, Pignola, Pinot Bianco, and/or Rossola
- Spumante Metodo Classico Rosé (RoSp): Any proportions of Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, Pignola, Pinot Bianco, and/or Rossola
- Varietals (WhSp, RoSp): Minimum 85% Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, Pignola, Pinot Bianco, or Rossola + OANRG
DESSERT AND SPECIALTY WINES
- Vendemmia Tardiva Bianco (Wh, WhSw): Same as Bianco or white varietals
- Vendemmia Tardiva Rosso (Rd, RdSw): Same as Rosso or red varietals
- Passito Bianco (WhSw): Same as Bianco or white varietals
- Passito Rosso (RdSw): Same as Rosso or red varietals
Significant Production Rules
- Zone of production: Numerous communes in the province of Sondrio
- Grapes for Vendemmia Tardiva must be dried exclusively on the vine; grapes for Passito must be dried off the vine in a fruttaio
- Minimum alcohol level: 10.0% for Passito Bianco (16.0% potential); 10.5% for Bianco, Rosato, and Rosso; 11.0% for Novello; 11.0% for Vendemmia Tardiva (13.0% potential); 11.5% for sparkling wines; 12.0% for Passito Rosso (16.0% potential)
- Residual sugar: Spumante and Rosato Spumante can range from brut to demisec; 45 g/l (4.5%) for Passito (presumably minimum)
- Aging: For Vendemmia Tardiva and Passito, minimum approx. 6 months (ERD = June 30, V+1)
