History: Established as a DOC in 1970; Recioto di Gambellara was established as a separate DOCG in 2008

Vineyard Area: 215 ha / 531 acres total for both Gambellara DOPs (2022)

  • Vin Santo from the Classico subzone only (WhSw): Minimum 80% Garganega; maximum 20% Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and/or Trebbiano

Significant Production Rules

  • Grapes for Classico Vin Santo must be dried on or off the vine to achieve a minimum potential alcohol level of 16.0%
  • Minimum alcohol level: 10.5% for Bianco; 11.0% for Spumante; 11.5% for Classico Bianco; 12.0% for Superiore; 16.0% (potential) for Classico Vin Santo
  • Residual sugar: Spumante can range from extra brut to dry
  • Aging: For Classico Vin Santo, minimum 2 years (ERD = January 1, V+3)
