History: Formerly part of the Colli Bolognesi DOC; established as a separate DOCG in 2010; name change and area expansion in 2014

Production: 7,390 hl / 82,100 cases (5-year average)

WHITE WINES
  • Superiore (Wh): Minimum 85% Grechetto Gentile (aka Grechetto di Todi, locally Alionzina); maximum 15% Pinot Nero vinified as a white wine; maximum 15% OANWG
  • Superiore from the Classico subzone only (Wh): Minimum 95% Grechetto + OANG
  • Frizzante (WhFr): Minimum 85% Grechetto; maximum 15% Pinot Nero vinified as a white wine; maximum 15% OANWG
SPARKLING WINES
  • Spumante (WhSp): Minimum 85% Grechetto; maximum 15% Pinot Nero vinified as a white wine; maximum 15% OANWG

  • Classico (Superiore only), the area originally delimited for the DOCG in 2010

Significant Production Rules

  • Minimum alcohol level: 11.0% for Frizzante and Spumante; 11.5% for Superiore; 12.0% for Superiore Classico
  • Residual sugar: Maximum 6 g/l (0.6%) for Superiore Classico, with higher allowances for wines with alcohol levels above 13.0%; Spumante can range from brut nature (zero dosage) to extra dry
  • Aging: For Superiore Classico, minimum approx. 1 year (ERD = October 4, V+1)
