History: Established as a DOC in 2017, elevating the Pinot Grigio wines from IGP delle Venezie (now IGP Trevenezie)

Production: 1,630,000 hl / 18,110,000 cases (2022)—95% exported

WHITE WINES
  • Bianco (Wh, WhFr): Minimum 50% Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, and/or Verduzzo (Friulano and/or Trevigiano) + OAWG
  • Pinot Grigio (Wh, WhFr): Minimum 85% Pinot Grigio; maximum 15% Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Muller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, and/or Verduzzo + OANWG*
ROSATO WINES
  • Pinot Grigio Rosato or Ramato or Rosè (Ro, RoFr): Minimum 85% Pinot Grigio; maximum 15% Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Muller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, and/or Verduzzo + OANWG*
SPARKLING WINES
  • Pinot Grigio Spumante (WhSp): Minimum 85% Pinot Grigio; maximum 15% Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, and/or Verduzzo + OANWG*
  • Pinot Grigio Spumante Rosato or Ramato or Rosè (RoSp): Minimum 85% Pinot Grigio; maximum 15% Chardonnay, Friulano, Garganega, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, and/or Verduzzo + OANWG*

Significant Production Rules

  • Zone of production: The entire regions of Friuli–Venezia Giulia and Veneto, plus the Trentino half of Trentino–Alto Adige (i.e., the province of Trento)
  • Spumante must be fermented in autoclaves (pressurized tanks)
  • Minimum alcohol level: 11%
  • Residual sugar: Spumante can range from zero dosage to dry
  • Aging: No minimums specified
  • Varietal Pinot Grigio wines may be labeled as “Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC”

* Until 2027, other nonaromatic white grapes may be used in addition to those listed.

Notes: The Bianco version accounts for well under 0.1% of production, so for practical purposes, all Delle Venezie DOC is Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC. Frizzante and spumante Pinot Grigio are about 0.3% of production each. The rosato version has not yet been measured separately from white versions.
